UniProtKB description:  Aldolase which can catalyze in vitro the aldolisation reaction between hydroxypyruvate (HPA) or pyruvate (PA) and D-glyceraldehyde (D-GA) (Ref.2). The condensation of hydroxypyruvate and D-glyceraldehyde produces 2-dehydro-D-galactonate as the major product (Ref.2). The condensation of pyruvate and D-glyceraldehyde produces 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-L-galactonate (Ref.2). Can use other electrophilic substrates such as L-glyceraldehyde, D- and L-lactaldehyde and D-erythrose (Ref.2). Also catalyzes the retro-aldol type decarboxylation of oxaloacetate, a general property of known pyruvate aldolases (Ref.2, Ref.3).
